MAIN & WEST GALLERIES

The Main and West Galleries present the 2010 Bay Area Annual Juried Exhibition, juried by Betti-Sue Hertz, Director of Visual Arts at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Ms. Hertz selected a total of 57 artworks by 39 artists, drawing from a pool of 401 entries by 137 applicants from all over California. The selected works express a wide range of range of approaches and sensibilities, yet all are informed by a sense of poetry and deep feeling. The media as well as approaches and concepts employed vary widely throughout the exhibition, from ceramics to mixed media and collage, from installations and photography to drawing and painting in acrylic, oil, and watercolor.

Since 2009 Ms. Hertz has been Director of Visual Arts at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where she has organized Wallworks (2009) and Renee Green: Endless Dreams and Time-Based Streams (2010). From 2000 to 2008 she was curator of contemporary art at the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA), where she produced several major exhibitions and catalogues, including Eleanor Antin: Historical Takes (2008); Animated Painting (2007); Transmission: The Art of Matta and Gordon Matta-Clark (2006); Past in Reverse: Contemporary Art of East Asia (2004), for which she received the Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award; and Axis Mexico: Common Objects and Cosmopolitan Actions (2002). From 2001 to 2008 she organized several editions of Contemporary Links, a commissioning program where artists including Alexandre Arrechea, Sandow Birk, Regina Frank, James Hyde, and Shahzia Sikander responded to works in SDMA’s collection. Before coming to California, Hertz co-organized (with Lydia Yee) Urban Mythologies: The Bronx Represented Since the 1960s (1999) for the Bronx Museum of the Arts and was director of Longwood Arts Project, Bronx, New York, from 1992 to 1998. Hertz has contributed to many periodicals, including The Architect’s Newspaper, Art Journal, Animation, Communication Arts, Flash Art, n.paradoxa, and Yishu.

The public is invited to a Juror’s Talk by Betti-Sue Hertz on Saturday, November 6 at 4 pm.
